Since the Apprenticeship Act was enacted in April 2011, all apprentices are obliged to work under a contract of employment with an employer and therefore be paid a wage in line with the National Minimum Wage regulations. Consequently, self-employed people will not undertake an apprenticeship unless the occupation/job is recognised as exempt under regulations governing the “alternative completion requirement.” ‘
