On a wireless communications rigger apprenticeship course, you’ll help install large steel structures on towers and rooftops.

The wireless communications rigger is an essential member of the field-based wireless rigging team that supports the cellular network and infrastructure in the United Kingdom.

Wireless communications riggers will be at the forefront of the 5G network’s nationwide roll-out and actively maintain the existing 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.

You will build substantial steel structures on towers and rooftops in this position, altering the existing structure as necessary. You will help lift and lower equipment for installation and removal, install various types and sizes of cable, read drawings and blueprints, demonstrate a range of climbing abilities, and you may even be needed to rescue colleagues in danger at height.

To be considered for this position, you must be comfortable working at heights and outdoors in a physically demanding capacity.

What you’ll learn

On an wireless communications rigger apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Conduct and document a dynamic risk assessment on-site in line with a valid safe system of work.
  • Select and put in place workplace signage and security measures.
  • Install, earth, and terminate coax and fibre in accordance with the manufacturer’s and operator’s installation specifications.
  • Install and demonstrate technical understanding of the major components of a wireless telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Use an Open, Short, and Precision Load to test cables and antenna systems for impedance and loss.
  • Work restraint, position, and fall arrest equipment should be selected and utilised in line with manufacturer recommendations and company policy.
  • Use slings, knots, and other attachment techniques to lift and lower objects and equipment safely.
  • Work at a height safely by using appropriate tower climbing techniques.
  • Choose and use the tools and equipment while working at a height.
  • Effectively contribute to the team and create positive working relationships.
  • Use verbal and nonverbal cues and gestures while communicating as a team.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • A demonstration of fitness and/or ability to operate at height. All entrants must be a minimum of 18 at the commencement of their employment because of insurance purposes.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Practical Assessment 
  • Professional Discussion 
  • Knowledge Test 

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Level: 2 – Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: ICT, PE, engineering
  • Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
