Water Treatment Technician

On a water treatment technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help develop, install and maintain water treatment programmes for water systems.

A water treatment technician designs, implements, and maintains water treatment programmes for industrial and commercial buildings, hotels, and institutional settings, such as colleges, schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.

Water use includes drinking and washing, space heating and cooling, process/manufacturing heating and cooling, energy transmission, power generation, industrial washing/cleaning operations, food preparation, healthcare, and direct product input. 

In addition, water treatment programmes are required to reduce health risks such as legionnaires disease, system corrosion, scale formation, and pollution.

You will collaborate with a specialised service provider contracted to manage water conditions in this job. You will be required to work independently and without supervision within both occupied and unoccupied buildings and advise and supervise water treatment operators, specialised subcontractors, and site workers doing specific water treatment operations.

What you’ll learn

On a water treatment technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Collect system data to aid in selecting operational resources such as access devices (ladders, scaffold or cherry picker).
  • Determine the suitability and correct functioning of resources and equipment for the work. Test equipment, chemical dosing equipment, water pumps, and other specialised equipment may be provided.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Three to five GCSEs, including maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge test 
  • Observation 
  • Professional discussion supported by a portfolio

Restrictions and requirements

You’ll need to:

  • pass a medical check

You’ll have to register with a water industry safety scheme.

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 24 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Science
  • Potential salary upon completion: £21,000 per annum
