Water Process Technician

On a water process technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help carry out reactive and routine maintenance on water process equipment.

A water process technician is in charge of doing reactive and routine maintenance on equipment to keep it safe and efficient and helping other disciplines when required.

This apprenticeship will prepare you to work on water supply and treatment, water networks and leaks, sewerage, and wastewater.

You may work as a water treatment process technician, a water distribution network technician, a water distribution leakage technician, a wastewater sewerage network technician, or a wastewater treatment technician as part of this apprenticeship.

As a water distribution network technician, you will analyse and evaluate network performance data and investigate and identify network performance issues.

What you’ll learn

On a water process technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Follow all corporate policies and procedures governing human resources, operations, and health and safety.
  • Carry out routine tasks to guarantee clean tap water and/or effective wastewater collection and treatment.
  • Work on the customer’s or company’s premises while demonstrating care and respect for customers and colleagues.
  • Perform equipment, instrument, and IT system testing.
  • Analyse and troubleshoot systems, equipment, instruments, and information technology systems, and implement effective solutions.
  • Conduct risk evaluations, including processes for lone workers.
  • Drive vehicles outfitted with equipment and supplies to different sites as required.
  • Engage with individuals using appropriate communication methods to give and receive information accurately and on time.
  • Work with focus and clarity in all weather conditions, spanning 24/7 operations, working alone at times, and safely changing working methods to reflect changes in working environments.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Three to five GCSEs, including maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods: 

  • Portfolio Assessment
  • Knowledge Assessment

Restrictions and requirements

You’ll need to:

  • pass a medical check

You’ll have to register with a water industry safety scheme.

Duration and level

  • Duration: 48 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
