During a sustainability business specialist apprenticeship, you’ll learn to develop, implement, and monitor sustainability strategies for businesses. This involves creating plans, managing budgets, and promoting these strategies to customers, suppliers, colleagues, and the public. It’s a challenging role that involves working across different parts of the organisation and often requires high independence.

Depending on the organisation, you might lead a small team of experts or work within a larger management structure. By the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll earn a master’s degree in sustainability, equipping you with the knowledge and skills to drive positive change in businesses and beyond.

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure Legal Compliance and Improve Sustainability: Support the business in complying with legal sustainability requirements and improve sustainability performance by implementing management systems.
  • Set Sustainability Goals: Work with the organisation to establish key sustainability goals.
  • Implement Auditing Program: Develop and execute an auditing program to ensure comprehensive sustainability measures.
  • Monitor Environmental Performance: Manage environmental data and track the business’s and its suppliers’ sustainability performance.
  • Review Sustainability Information: Assess sustainability management information incidents and advise the company on performance and risks.
  • Train Staff on Sustainability: Educate employees on sustainability principles, laws, and potential risks.
  • Communicate Sustainability Best Practices: Maintain effective communication on sustainability practices with colleagues.
  • Address Social Issues: Lead initiatives addressing poverty and inclusivity within the business.
  • Reduce Waste and Emissions: Minimise waste and encourage sustainable sourcing to lessen environmental impact.

Apprenticeship End-Point Assessment (EPA)

At the end of the apprenticeship, there is an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to evaluate the apprentice’s knowledge, skills, and behaviours. An independent assessor conducts this assessment, including work based project and technical interview.

Before entering the EPA gateway, apprentices must meet certain requirements, including English and mathematics qualifications, completion of specified projects, and passing relevant qualifications listed in the occupational standard.

Apprentices who complete the EPA will receive a certificate. For more information or assistance, apprentices can contact their employer, training provider, or the EPA organisation for support and guidance, including requesting reasonable adjustments due to disability or special considerations.
