What you’ll learn

On a sports coach apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Craft coaching philosophies and professional practices that consider the needs of key stakeholders, the context of sports, and applicable codes.
  • Implement methods for professional development planning and training in self-awareness skills.
  • Employ transformational coaching approaches and strategic planning methods.
  • Establish organisational vision, strategies, policies, and processes to ensure coaching systems are legally sound, ethical, effective, and efficient, including compliance with current health and safety, safeguarding, data protection, and equality laws.
  • Develop organisational workforce structures that uphold best practices and demonstrate the value of diversity within the coaching team.
  • Utilise techniques for coaching team development and deployment that align with relevant legislation, policies, processes, operational standards, and scopes of practice.
  • Implement coaching service delivery approaches, including industry support networks, and foster collaborative, cohesive, and competent coaching teams.
  • Design curricula and coaching pedagogies that cater to the unique developmental needs of participants, the demands of specific sports or physical activities, and the occupational environment.
  • Create progressive program designs and delivery techniques that prioritise accessibility, duty of care, and the holistic development of individuals, as well as the acquisition of sport-specific skills.
  • Design progressive programs that ensure safety and provide support during events and competitions while facilitating learning transfer across different situations.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Five GCSEs at 9-4 (or A*-C on the old grading scale), including English and Maths.
  • A levels, or equivalent qualification.

Assessment methods

The programme is assessed in various ways before completing the End Point Assessment including a work based project and presentation with questioning, a coaching session plan and a practical observation with questioning and professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio.

Restrictions and requirements

  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the end-point assessment.

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Relevant school subjects: PE and biology
  • Potential salary upon completion: £20,000
