How Does Apprenticeship Pay Work

The government sets a minimum wage for jobs to pay apprentices every year. Apprentices aged 16 and 18 and those aged 19 and over are entitled to the minimum wage rate in their first year.

How does apprenticeship pay work?

All other apprentices are entitled to their generation’s applicable national minimum wage rates. Therefore, wage rates can steadily increase during your apprenticeship as you develop your skills and knowledge.

The government’s published costs for national minimum wages can be found at https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates.

Your hourly rate compensates you for your job during the contracted hours, which involves practising and studying the profession.

Furthermore, depending on the terms of the agreement, you might be entitled to overtime pay for any unpaid work you do, so it’s best to check how the apprenticeship pay work in the company you want to work for at the interview.
