What is an Apprenticeship?

It allows individuals to work and earn while receiving training in a specific trade, occupation, or profession. Apprenticeships are available in various industries, such as construction, healthcare, information technology, etc.

Apprenticeship Wage for Individuals Over 25

In April 2017, the UK government introduced the National Living Wage (NLW) and National Minimum Wage (NMW) to protect workers’ rights and ensure fair wages for all employees, including apprentices. The apprentice wage rates differ depending on the age of the apprentice and the number of hours they work per week.

The current NMW and NLW rates were as follows:

Apprentices Under 19:

    • Apprentices under 19 are entitled to a minimum apprenticeship wage of £5.28 per hour, regardless of the number of hours they work.

Apprentices Aged 19 and Over:

    • Apprentices aged 19 or over in their first year of the apprenticeship are entitled to the same rate of £5.28 per hour.
    • However, once an apprentice aged 19 or over completes the first year of their apprenticeship, they are entitled to the age-related NMW or NLW rate, depending on their age.

Age-Related Minimum Wage:

    • Individuals over 25 are eligible for the National Living Wage, which is £10.42 per hour.

Apprenticeships offer a fantastic opportunity for individuals over 25 to enhance their skills, start a new career, or switch industries. The wage structure for apprentices over 25 ensures they receive fair compensation while learning and working. If you are considering an apprenticeship, don’t hesitate to explore the options available and embark on an exciting journey towards a rewarding career.
