On a plumbing and domestic heating technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems.
A plumbing and domestic heating expert is in charge of plumbing and heating systems, including planning, selection, installation, service, commissioning, and maintenance.
You will learn to install plumbing and heating systems as an apprentice, including measuring, marking, cutting, bending, and jointing metallic and non-ferrous pipe.
Examples of appliances and equipment include gas, oil, solid fuel boilers, pumps, heat emitters, bathroom furniture, and controls as part of cold water, hot water, central heating system, or above ground drainage and rainwater systems.
In addition, you’ll be at the forefront of integrating cutting-edge environmental technologies such as heat pumps, solar thermal systems, biomass boilers, and water recycling systems.
Customer service skills, as well as cleanliness and respect, are essential.
What you’ll learn
On a plumbing and domestic heating technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:
- Create a safe working environment, follow health and safety legislation, standards of practice, and safe working practices.
- Use techniques for selection, planning, installation, testing, commissioning and decommissioning service, maintenance, issue identification, and repair of cold water, hot water, central heating, above ground drainage, and rainfall systems.
- Use electrical component and control system installation and testing techniques on plumbing and home heating systems.
- Accept responsibility for both your work and the safety and well-being of others. Supervise and organise the work schedule. Work and resource management should be carried out in an environmentally responsible manner.
Entry requirements
You’ll usually need:
- 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship.
- Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.
Assessment methods
The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods:
- Multiple Choice Test
- Design project
Restrictions and requirements
You’ll need to:
- be on the Gas Safe Register to work with domestic gas heating systems

- Duration: 48 months
