On a power network craftsperson apprenticeship course, you’ll help construct, maintain and repair the UK’s electrical power network.

A power network craftsperson is in charge of the safe construction, maintenance, and repair of the United Kingdom’s electrical power network to provide the country with a safe and reliable source of electricity.

You will work at various locations across a company’s electrical network. Because you’ll be working in an industry with high safety-critical duties, you’ll need to develop a disciplined and responsible work attitude.

The work requires a high level of physical aptitude to reach high-altitude areas. Working on overhead lines, underground cables, and substation fitting are the three specialisations of this trade.

What you’ll learn

On a power network craftsperson apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Work with focus and clarity in all weather conditions, spanning 24/7 operations, working alone at times, and safely changing working methods to reflect changes in working environments.
  • Work with care and respect for client premises/property and customer installations.
  • Accept personal accountability for adhering to safety rules and achieving job objectives.
  • Engage with individuals using various appropriate communication methods to give and receive information.
  • Determine what is incorrect/what is likely to go wrong and the appropriate solution(s) using current information.
  • Prepare and order equipment and duties according to a set of regulations (s)
  • Perform standby activities to provide network coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week in fault situations requiring diagnostic testing procedures to analyse and calculate system parameters and rectification operations.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Three to five GCSEs, including maths, English and a science.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Industry context ‘Trade Test’ 
  • Technical Interview 
  • Behaviour and Progress Final Assessment 

Restrictions and requirements

You’ll need to:

  • be able to cope with working at a height

You may work in outlying rural regions.

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 30 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Science
  • Potential salary upon completion: £30,000 per annum
