Entry requirements vary from employer to employer, so read the job description carefully before applying. But knowing which apprenticeship level is right for you is also important.
Intermediate Apprenticeship
What do I need?
This is the most conventional level of training. Typically, a couple of GCSEs are needed, with two of them preferably being English and Math.
On the other hand, few intermediate apprenticeships do not need formal qualifications, making them suitable for school leavers who want to focus on acquiring skills on the job whilst earning money.
Most jobs would ask you to take a basic literacy and numeracy exam if you do not have a C or grade 4 in GCSE English or Maths; however, read the job requirements to see your qualifications.
What am I hoping to gain?
A level 2 competency credential, a functional skills certificate, and a knowledge-based qualification are all available. You may also work for a Level 2 NVQ, equivalent to 5 GCSE passes. You will be considered for an Advanced Apprenticeship after finishing an Intermediate Apprenticeship.
Advanced Apprenticeship
What do I need?
An Advanced Apprenticeship could be for you if you already have 5 GCSE passes or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship and want to continue upgrading your skills.
What am I hoping to gain?
As part of an Advanced Apprenticeship, you can receive a level 3 competency diploma, a functional skills certificate, and a knowledge-based qualification, such as a BTEC. Completing this stage of apprenticeship is equivalent to finishing two A-Levels.

Higher and Degree Apprenticeships
Are fantastic opportunities to further your studies whilst earning a living. They are available in various industries, from banking to engineering. More employers are offering them regularly, so keep an eye out for what’s available. So, if you want to avoid the high cost of university tuition while also getting a high-quality degree, this amount might be right for you.
What do I need?
Many of those doing this apprenticeship are above 18, have completed an Advanced Apprenticeship, or have completed at least two A-Levels.
What am I hoping to gain?
Depending on the programme, you can earn qualifications such as an NVQ Level 4 or a foundation degree, HND, or even an undergraduate degree if you complete a Higher or Degree apprenticeship.
