What to Take to an Apprenticeship Interview

The importance of preparation and testing cannot be overstated. You must confidently demonstrate a thorough understanding of the profession you want to pursue and your future employer’s company. So what to take to an apprenticeship interview?

  • It’s all about first impressions! Interviewers are said to have formed an opinion about your suitability for the job within the first 30 seconds of meeting you.
  • Make sure you’ve dressed appropriately and presentable. Since every workplace has its culture, it’s best to play it safe and avoid wearing unnecessary jewellery, body piercings, make-up, or bold hairstyles.
  • Make proper eye contact with the interviewer and give a firm handshake.
  • Bring a copy of your resume, the job description, and a pen and paper. Having this in a smart folder or portfolio makes an excellent first impression, gives you something to keep throughout the interview, and gives you something to relate to if you’ve written your questions.
  • To all questions, try to offer complete and honest answers. It’s OK to take a moment to formulate your answer; a thoughtful response is preferable to a hasty one. Ask the interviewer to repeat the question if you need more time to think about your answer.
  • Often try to include examples that demonstrate the ability or personal quality needed, rather than simply saying you’re good at something.
  • This could come from school/college events, outside hobbies, athletics, or part-time work.
  • It’s perfectly acceptable to ask questions, and you’ll almost always be allowed to do so after the interview. Don’t just inquire about your pay and benefits!

We hope these tips will guide you on what to take to an apprenticeship interview.
