What is a Retail Apprenticeship

A Retail apprenticeship will give you the skills necessary to excel in the industry.

You can acquire retail knowledge and expertise as an apprentice while still learning skills like communication and numeracy.

The apprenticeship will give you hands-on experience, enabling you to decide which retail area you are more comfortable working in.

Who would it be suitable for?

It is ideal for a real team player who is upbeat and naturally shows an interest in their employer’s products and services.

Retail is all about customer service, so you must communicate quickly, be self-motivated, well-presented, and have outstanding people skills.

Since the position is rarely 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., it would accommodate someone who can function in a complex and ever-changing setting.

Since you will be dealing with currencies, prices, and commodities daily, numeracy and literacy are also needed.

What are the possible job paths?

There are a variety of shops selling everything from food to fashion to DIY to mobile phones.

Retail companies range significantly in size, but there are opportunities to compete in tiny small shops or household names with stores all around the globe.

As a Level 2 apprentice, you’d most likely start as an assistant, with duties including checkouts and cash handling, customer care, replenishing and rotating stock, setting up displays, and stock control, like purchasing and delivery.

When you advance, positions range from Sales Assistants to Store Managers, Buyers and Merchandisers to Marketing Executives.

Some people tend to work in areas relevant to learning and development, such as personnel, finance, or information technology.

How long would it take?

Training takes between 12 and 18 months from start to end.
