On a surveying technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help collect information from site inspections to inform advice given to clients on land, property or construction.
Residential and commercial building, property, and land-based sectors such as agriculture, mining, waste management, and planning and development provide surveying technician apprenticeships.
As an apprentice surveying technician, you will learn how to effectively collect information from inspections or visits to buildings, land, and construction sites; how to take measurements of buildings, land, or plans; how to meet with other professionals and clients to get and provide information about land, property, or construction; and how to collect and record data about land, property, or construction.
Upon completion, you will become an associate member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
What you’ll learn
On a surveying technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:
- Gather and measure data pertaining to the survey.
- Demonstrate your knowledge of health and safety issues and compliance requirements.
- Apply principles of building technology and material environmental performance.
- Apply contract law principles to property acquisition/disposal contracts, standard forms of building contracts, and other property-related transactions.
- Manage one’s own time and responsibilities and effectively communicate and negotiate.
Entry requirements
You’ll usually need:
- 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship.
- Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.
Assessment methods
RICS Associate assessment Work-based submission including:
- Summary of experience
- Case study
- Record a minimum of 48 hours of continuing professional development
- Ethics test
Restrictions and requirements
You’ll need to:
- have a Certificate of Competence, if you carry out hazardous tasks using a chainsaw

- Duration: 24 months
