Specialist Tyre Operative

Specialist Tyre Operative

You’ll work on vehicles from specially equipped mobile units on a specialist tyre operative apprenticeship course.

You will carry out scheduled tyre maintenance as well as emergency response work in a variety of contexts, including public roads, highways, and construction sites, as well as docks, military facilities, and airports.

You’ll get expertise with a range of machinery, including specialised tyre installation and maintenance equipment, lifting, measuring and diagnostic equipment, and vehicle geometry.

Because the commercial vehicles you’ll be working on are crucial to their operators, developing and conducting regular maintenance programmes is necessary.

You’ll need to be well-organised, a problem-solver and have outstanding communication skills since you’ll be working alone a lot, especially when providing safety suggestions to others.

What you’ll learn

On a specialist tyre operative apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Check to see whether the service vehicle is in excellent operating shape.
  • Use tyre re-grooving equipment to cut new tread on worn commercial tyres, prolonging their life and ensuring safe road-holding performance.
  • Perform a dynamic risk assessment before and throughout every repair operation, and only work when it is safe.
  • Assess customer and passenger risks, such as the risk to the vehicle’s driver or passing traffic, and apply appropriate means to secure the work area, such as the use of hazard lights, beacons, and traffic cones.
  • Examine, remove, repair, and replace commercial vehicle tyres.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent or relevant experience.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level before taking the end-point assessment.
