Overview

A senior leader holds a significant role in a public or private organisation, often at a high level, like governance or directorship. This apprenticeship is designed for you if you’re pursuing this position or are already in it. It covers roles like top executives in companies or high-ranking military positions. The program focuses on equipping you with the skills to lead effectively, set clear goals, and drive strategic plans. You’ll learn to analyse market trends and external factors to spot opportunities and threats in the long term. Moreover, you’ll develop inclusive leadership skills, fostering ethical, innovative, and supportive work environments that produce results. By completing this apprenticeship, you’ll earn a master’s degree in management.

What You’ll Do

  • Set Strategic Direction: Work with the board or equivalent leadership to define the big picture goals for their department or area. Encourage employees to understand and support the organisation’s vision.
  • Develop Operational Policies: Lead the creation and review of day-to-day rules and procedures within their area. Ensure these policies match the organisation’s needs and are effective and sustainable.
  • Manage Projects: Take charge of important projects like changing the organisation’s work, introducing new products, or improving customer experiences. Lead teams to achieve these goals.
  • Allocate Resources: Decide how to use the organisation’s money, people, and technology based on careful planning and solid evidence.
  • Handle Crises: Lead responses to emergencies that could affect the organisation’s performance. Find solutions that responsibly balance the needs of the organisation and its customers or stakeholders.
  • Develop People: Take charge of developing the skills and careers of those in their area. This includes planning for the future and providing support and guidance.
  • Promote a Positive Culture: Encourage a work environment that values ethics, diversity, innovation, and supportiveness. Aim for continual improvement in how the business operates.
  • Report Progress: Keep the leadership informed about how well their area meets its goals.
  • Build Relationships: Maintain good relationships with important people inside and outside the organisation, influencing decisions when needed.
  • Communicate Externally: Manage how their area communicates with the outside world, ensuring it fits the overall organisational communication strategy.
  • Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with trends and changes in society, the economy, and technology that could affect their work. Encourage innovation to meet new challenges and seize opportunities.
  • Ensure Compliance: Ensure their area follows all the rules and regulations set by the organisation internally and externally. This includes meeting any standards set by regulators or government bodies.

Apprenticeship End-Point Assessment (EPA)

At the end of the apprenticeship, there is an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to evaluate the apprentice’s knowledge, skills, and behaviours. An independent assessor conducts this assessment, including strategic business proposal, presentation with questioning and professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Before entering the EPA gateway, apprentices must meet certain requirements, including English and mathematics qualifications, completion of specified projects, and passing relevant qualifications listed in the occupational standard.

Apprentices who complete the EPA will receive a certificate. For more information or assistance, apprentices can contact their employer, training provider, or the EPA organisation for support and guidance, including requesting reasonable adjustments due to disability or special considerations.

Entry Requirements: Previous management experience, having undertaken an apprenticeship or qualifications
Relevant school subjects: Business studies
Typical duration to EPA: 24 months
Achievement upon completion: Level 7 (Degree)—equivalent to a master’s degree
Potential salary upon completion: £50,000 per annum
