Science Manufacturing Technician

On a science manufacturing technician apprenticeship course, you’ll operate the systems and equipment involved in producing goods. A scientific manufacturing technician may work in various sectors, including chemical, primary and secondary pharmaceutical, biotechnology, formulated products, and nuclear power.

As an apprentice scientific manufacturing technician, you will operate the systems and equipment utilised to produce things. You may be needed to work in several settings, such as wearing specialised safety equipment, working shifts, and on sites that are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Many organisations operate in highly regulated environments, and appropriate attitudes and behaviour are desired to ensure workers adhere to organisational safety and regulatory norms.

What you’ll learn

On a science manufacturing technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Work in a scientific manufacturing workplace safely, understanding personal responsibility for health, safety, and the environment, as well as risk management ideas.
  • Control and monitor a process, facility, or piece of equipment safely, efficiently, and effectively, and manage difficulties or fix anomalous occurrences.
  • Participate in the continuing process of performance improvement.
  • Develop and apply theoretical knowledge of essential science and technology and apply it to the relevant industry and professional position.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment consists of four distinct assessment methods: 

  • Review of behaviours evaluation log
  • A synoptic assessment test
  • A vocational competence discussion
  • Scenario case study

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 27 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Science
  • Potential salary upon completion: £20,000 per annum
