On refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump engineering technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help plan, prepare and safely carry out work in process, product and space cooling.

A refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump engineering technician safely and efficiently designs, develops and executes work in process, product, and space cooling.

This apprenticeship will equip you with the necessary transferable knowledge and skills to work in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumping.

As an apprentice technician, you will be responsible for designing, installing, routine maintenance, reactive service, commissioning, and decommissioning refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pump systems in the food production and transportation sectors.

What you’ll learn

On a refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump engineering technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Install, commission, test, problem detection, system correction, component/refrigerant suitability, and selection
  • Using electrical circuits and systems, as well as pressure systems
  • Evaluate and minimise refrigerant risks, such as toxicity, flammability, and other potential risks or hazards to oneself and others.
  • Configure, test, and debug electrical and electronic control systems, as well as integrate them with system-associated communication networks
  • Identify heat and cooling loads, as well as selecting and balancing appropriate components and systems for maximum performance and efficiency
  • Retrofitt and retrofill existing equipment to utilise lower GWP refrigerants, including issues about safety, dependability, and the environment.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge & Skills Test
  • Practical Test
  • Professional Interview supported by an Apprentice Development Journal synopsis

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 36 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Science and DT
  • Potential salary upon completion: £30,000 per annum
