On a print technician apprenticeship course, you’ll be responsible for the effective physical reproduction of artistry, designs and projects.

In a technologically complex and constantly changing business, a print technician is responsible for the effective physical reproduction of artwork, designs, and projects to meet the practical needs of both the customer and the firm.

Because it offers a physical product integrated into the multi-channel, multimedia, and digital world, the printing industry is important to marketing and communications. A print expert produces a wide range of printed goods.

You will operate print equipment and gear efficiently and safely to produce print products according to order requirements and on time.

To do so, you must be acquainted with a wide range of print materials and technology to meet criteria such as colour matching, print resolution, client specifications, and unique company standards.

In this role, you will perform risk assessments and handle hazardous chemicals safely to maintain a safe working environment that complies with all health, safety, and environmental laws.

What you’ll learn

On a print technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Run printing equipment and machinery effectively per the order specification and timeframe, such as printing a colour magazine onto paper in 2 hours to meet the production schedule; fold a leaflet per the specification and timeframe.
  • Use a systematic approach and methodology to discover areas for improvement, provide solutions, and put them into action.
  • Work must be performed in line with the required quality standards, objectives, and timescales. 
  • Maintain accurate records as required, utilising both digital and manual techniques.
  • Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental laws.
  • Communicate and cooperate with people effectively, especially giving clear instructions to colleagues.
  • Manage and train printing employees. When required, the capacity to take the lead.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and Maths, for an advanced apprenticeship. 
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods: 

  • Practical observation with questioning
  • Knowledge Test 
  • Professional Discussion supported by portfolio

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 36 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: ICT and art
  • Potential salary upon completion: £22,000 per annum
