Powered Pedestrian Door Installer And Service Engineer

On a powered pedestrian door installer and service engineer apprenticeship course, you’ll help prepare and safely carry out work activities in door automation.

In this job, you will learn how to operate a range of powered doors, such as sliding, swing, folding, balancing, and rotating doors, which provide barrier-free building access, building security, and user comfort while contributing to environmental obligations. Installations may take place on new construction sites, during building renovations, and in occupied buildings.

Your duties will include installing, regular maintenance, problem detection and repair, commissioning, and deactivating automatic doors. You will thoroughly understand technological principles and the safe operation of automatic doors.

You’ll be able to work without direct supervision and effectively interact with other trades and end-users. In addition, you will ensure that automatic doors used by the general public and employees are both efficient and safe.

What you’ll learn

On an automatic door installer and service engineer apprenticeship, you’ll learn to:

  • Set up, test, and detect faults in electrical wiring and control systems and integrate them with motors, control boards, and safety sensors for powered pedestrian doors.
  • Measure building openings and correctly position and fasten door components and the automatic drive unit. Connecting, calibrating, and testing the installed system and any required activation and safety sensors.
  • Use systematic methods and a reasonable approach to problem solving and technical challenges in powered pedestrian door applications.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Observation
  • Knowledge test
  • Interview, underpinned by a log book

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 24 months
  • Level: 2 – Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: DT and engineering
  • Potential salary upon completion: £25,000 per annum
