Mineral Processing Mobile and Static Plant Operator

On a mineral processing mobile and static plant operator apprenticeship course, you’ll help run and maintain heavy mobile plant equipment.

The efficient and safe operation of fixed or mobile heavy plant equipment is the responsibility of a mineral processing mobile and static plant operator. Therefore, you will be expected to acquire competence in operating one piece of plant equipment throughout your apprenticeship.

You will learn to produce high-quality products such as ready-mixed concrete, mortar, asphalt, cement, and precast or prestressed concrete as an operator.

Your duties include doing preventive and routine maintenance inspections on equipment and housekeeping. You will also report plant issues, conduct risk assessments, work alone and in groups, and demonstrate exceptional product knowledge and a strong dedication to safety, health, and the environment. You’ll also be in charge of reporting on supply availability and quality.

What you’ll learn

On a mineral processing mobile and static plant operator apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Conduct pre-start and post-operational plant equipment checks.
  • Operate fixed or mobile plant equipment in line with company standards, safe work practices, and current law.
  • Operate stationary or mobile plant equipment successfully and efficiently.
  • Evaluate, detect, and report any environmental impact of an action.
  • Conduct routine and reactive maintenance following company policy, procedures, and manufacturer specifications
  • Use materials, fluids, and lubricants required for day-to-day operation and maintenance following company policy, procedures, Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) data, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Plan and carry out required operations in line with the company’s key performance metrics and measure and monitor progress against them.
  • Monitor stock levels of required materials and products and report issues with these in line with company policy and procedures.
  • To produce a high-quality end product consistently in line with customer and company needs, whether it’s aggregates, ready-mixed concrete, cement, mortar, asphalt, cement, precast, or prestressed concrete.
  • Monitor final product quality and stock levels and report issues in line with company rules and procedures.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • GCSEs, usually including English and maths, or equivalent, for an intermediate apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge Assessment 
  • Practical Observation and Professional Interview

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Level: 2 – Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: DT
  • Potential salary upon completion: £22,000 per annum
