On a metal recycling technical manager apprenticeship course, you’ll help manage a financially effective metal recycling plant that considers and responds to rigorous regulations and legislation pertinent to the sector’s operating operations.

As a metal recycling technical manager, you will control the day-to-day operations of a metal recycling facility.

You will be in charge of all activities related to the following areas: the health, safety, and well-being of all employees and visitors; environmental accountability for the site, adhering to set guidelines; overall financial responsibility for the site; human resources; operations and logistics, including all sector-specific and site-based equipment; and community relations and assistance.

According to the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management, the metal recycling technical manager will be entitled to student membership during the apprenticeship and associate membership upon completion.

What you’ll learn

On a metal recycling technical manager apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Apply legal and regulatory criteria to run a metal recycling plant legally and compliantly. b) Determine if organisational processes and procedures and the people who adhere to them comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage Metal Recycling processes/procedures/plans unique to each site/team/equipment and execute within own area of responsibility, focusing on material acceptance, storage, treatment, and shipment. On-site security and logistics
  • Analyse and analyse data and information to make educated decisions and solve problems like commercial and employee data/information.
  • Conduct a training needs analysis for the whole site staff.
  • Communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, both verbally and in writing.
  • Monitor and evaluate performance in people, money, and site operations, and then take appropriate management action.
  • Report on processes/procedures/plans pertinent to the specific site/team/equipment and execute within one’s area of responsibility.
  • For example, manage and influence employees, visitors, and subcontractors by establishing appropriate rules and procedures.
  • Delegate suitable responsibilities, such as weighbridge calibration, to meet the needs of the site and the larger business.
  • Improve the company’s operational efficiency and financial performance through negotiating better outcomes.
  • Make good relationships with stakeholders to help the business run more smoothly. Interactions with communities, customers, employees, and regulators are examples of this.
  • Persuade and persuade a range of stakeholders to increase operational operations.
  • Monitor metal market risks and implement risk-mitigation strategies as needed.
  • Investigate problems and/or opportunities to determine the underlying cause, then implement real-world remedies based on the findings.
  • Effectively manage complex, demanding, and controversial situations and people.
  • Manage competing priorities in a changing site context.
  • Identify and document risk, and then take the required management activities in line with the requirements of the location.
  • On-site management and control of people, stock, assets, plant, and equipment.
  • Maintain correct site records for Site, Commercial, and People, following relevant regulations and business requirements.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises four assessment methods:

  • Knowledge test 
  • Interview underpinned by a portfolio 
  • Site Inspection 
  • Project with questioning 

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 30 months
  • Level: 5 – Higher Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Business studies
  • Potential salary upon completion: £30,000

Restrictions and requirements

You’ll need to:

  • have a full driving licence
