Overview

During a medical statistician apprenticeship, you’ll have the opportunity to work across various industries, such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, medical technology, biotechnology, food safety, environmental safety, and academia. In this role, your primary responsibility is to ensure that research studies are properly designed, conducted, analysed, interpreted, and reported with statistical rigour. This ensures that the conclusions drawn from the studies are reliable and trustworthy.

On a day-to-day basis, you’ll collaborate with regulatory bodies, ethics committees, scientists, clinical teams, and medical writers to guarantee that their work adheres to statistical standards. Strong problem-solving skills are essential for this role, as is a keen interest in staying updated on the latest methodological advancements in medical research. You may also be required to attend conferences and contribute your expertise to medical publications and statistical tutorials for colleagues in the field.

  • Communicate the results of medical research using both basic and advanced statistical methods in a way that’s easy to understand.
  • Help yourself and others improve by sharing best practices and teaching effective methods through coaching, mentoring, and training.

Apprenticeship End-Point Assessment (EPA)

At the end of the apprenticeship, there is an End-Point Assessment (EPA) to evaluate the apprentice’s knowledge, skills, and behaviours. An independent assessor conducts this assessment, including work based project report with presentation and questioning and professional interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence.

Before entering the EPA gateway, apprentices must meet certain requirements, including English and mathematics qualifications, completion of specified projects, and passing relevant qualifications listed in the occupational standard.

Apprentices who complete the EPA will receive a certificate. For more information or assistance, apprentices can contact their employer, training provider, or the EPA organisation for support and guidance, including requesting reasonable adjustments due to disability or special considerations.

Entry Requirements: Depend on employer, but likely a 2:2 degree in a numerically based subject.
Relevant school subjects: Science, ICT, maths
Typical duration to EPA: 30 months
Achievement upon completion: Level 7 (Degree)—equivalent to a master’s degree
Potential salary upon completion: £35,000 per annum
