On a maintenance and operations engineering technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help maintain plant and equipment’s safety, integrity and effective operation.

The maintenance and operations engineering technician apprenticeship covers electrical, mechanical, control and instrumentation, wind turbine, electrical system and process control, electromechanical, and plant operations.

As a technician in these positions, you will be in charge of the safety, integrity, and efficient operation of plant and equipment in one or more industries that are part of the larger national infrastructure within the engineering sector, such as electricity generation, telecommunications power plants, and oil and gas refinement.

Each profession requires a somewhat different path in one’s career. For example, electrical, mechanical, control and instrumentation, and wind turbine specialists will work on a wide range of typical plant and equipment, so you’ll most likely travel about during your career.

What you’ll learn

On a maintenance and operations engineering technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Adhere to industrial health, safety, and environmental regulations and working practices.
  • Find and fix faults in machinery and equipment.
  • Interact with and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal position and responsibilities.
  • Read, comprehend, and interpret information while conforming to technical specifications and supporting documentation.
  • Create work locations for job-related activities and re-establish such areas once the work-related activities are finished.
  • Assess and test the operation and condition of the plant and its equipment
  • Communicate, handover, and ensure that the necessary engineering process is completed as specified.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Three GCSEs, including maths, English and science, for an advanced apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge assessment 
  • A final observation of practical work
  • A technical interview

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 36 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Science and engineering
  • Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
