Leisure Duty Manager

On a leisure duty manager apprenticeship course, you’ll help oversee the day-to-day operation of a leisure facility.

The leisure duty manager manages a leisure facility daily, such as a swimming pool, multi-functional sports hall, fitness suite, creche, children’s soft play, health suite, climbing wall, or outdoor sports track.

Your responsibility will be to guarantee that the facility is ready for use following the activity schedule and that all areas maintain the best safety, cleanliness, security, and operational efficiency feasible.

You’ll be in charge of staff performance and development, as well as giving leadership to a diverse range of employees, such as lifeguards, receptionists, sports instructors, fitness teams, and creche workers.

What you’ll learn

On a leisure duty manager apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Lead and be accountable for the safe functioning of a multi-functional recreational facility daily.
  • Ensure that the leisure facility is fully operational and that workers and equipment are adequately resourced and ready for customer use by carrying out tasks such as monitoring the setup and takedown of sophisticated equipment (trampolines and electronic swimming pool hoists) and pool maintenance (PH and chlorine levels)
  • Solve day-to-day problems to ensure that the recreational facility’s service needs are met and maintained.
  • Encourage, inspire, develop, and encourage one another to form a strong team and individual relationships.
  • Provide workers with open, honest, and transparent feedback, and ensure that all employees adhere to agreed-upon standards and practices by exhibiting decisive leadership.
  • Make sure that your own and your team’s communications is delivered in a style and manner that is acceptable for a wide range of customers, including adults, the disabled, ethnic and minority groups.
  • Conduct regular audits and evaluations to monitor and assess facility compliance with applicable laws and industry standards, such as fire exit inspections, changing room cleanliness, and pool water quality.
  • Create concise, informative reports on any events, incidents, or occurrences in compliance with regulations and procedures.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure that resources (materials and equipment) are used efficiently.
  • Manage internal IT systems to support the effectiveness of the company and facilities.
  • Analyse and understand financial information, taking appropriate action as needed.
  • Create financial reports in your area of responsibility and seek ways to reduce losses and increase profits.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Relevant, active experience in the leisure sector.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this level before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment consists of three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Project  
  • Presentation  
  • Professional discussion

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: PE
  • Potential salary upon completion: £21,000 per annum
