Machinists are primarily involved in highly-skilled, complex, and precision work, machining components from speciality materials using conventional and/or CNC machine tools such as centre lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, horizontal and cylindrical grinding machines, electro discharge machines, single and multi-axis CNC machines, and a variety of other machine tools.
They must be capable of setting up, operating, and adjusting/editing machine tool settings. In addition, they must be able to create, test, and/or modify programmes using CNC equipment.
They will be needed to measure and inspect the components being produced and make changes to the equipment/programme to ensure the components meet the necessary standards before and after the machining processes.
The Level 3 Advanced Machinist Apprenticeship lasts about 48 months. The apprentice will be expected to attend college on a block release basis for the first 12 months of this Apprenticeship.
