Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative

Highway Electrical Maintenance and Installation Operative

On a highway electrical maintenance and installation operative apprenticeship course, you’ll help install and service electrical support structures, equipment and systems on roads and motorways.

A highway electrical maintenance and installation operative is a multi-skilled professional who can install equipment such as street lighting columns and traffic signal poles and maintain that equipment by correcting faults when inoperable.

Other sub-sectors within highway electrics include street lighting, traffic signals, safety cameras, and highway communications. Each uses unique equipment and systems, so you’ll choose one depending on your employer’s specialisation.

What you’ll learn

On a highway electrical maintenance and installation operative apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Use hazard identification, site-specific risk assessments, and safe work methods to keep themselves, their colleagues, other workers, pedestrians, and the travelling public safe.
  • Identify common types of highway electrical equipment and the underlying principles of installation and maintenance (e.g., street lights, traffic signals, traffic signs, safety cameras) – as well as in-depth knowledge of the chosen sub-sector (s).
  • Observe on-site procedures for detecting hazards and taking the required actions to keep the site safe – (e.g. after a road traffic incident where a vehicle hits a streetlight or traffic signal – liaising with emergency services and electricity company, ensuring the site is safe for traffic and pedestrians)
  • Identify and correctly apply appropriate surface protection solutions (e.g., painting lighting columns) and dispose of rubbish.
  • Safely performing correct surface preparation (e.g., deploying mobile elevated work platforms and ensuring the public’s and property’s safety).
