Fenestration Installer

On a fenestration installer apprenticeship course, you’ll help install replacement and new build fenestration products on-site.

You may work on projects such as installing windows, doors, and bi-fold doors in homes and public buildings and large new-build office and housing complexes.

You will be working on-site in a range of settings, including both inside and outside of buildings, at times at heights, and in all weather conditions.

You will be responsible for finishing your work with minimal supervision, ensuring that the result meets installation quality and deadlines.

Following your apprenticeship, you may be able to move to more specialised occupations such as curtain walling, surveying, and working on high-rise or high-risk buildings with further training.

What you’ll learn

On a fenestration installer apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Choose the suitable materials, components, and equipment for each project.
  • Read and understand specifications, schematics, and work instructions, including BIM, and follow them.
  • Prepare the work area effectively, keep the site secure, and ensure that all parties (occupants, children, pets, the general public, and other tradespeople) are considered.
  • Select and use manual methods and equipment to install items following requirements.
  • Install items and fasteners, inspect for level and plumb and adhere to all regulations, manufacturer directions, and specifications.
  • Apply external wet sealants and associated products such as foam rods as support material, and so forth. scribing
  • Prepare Apertures for Installation by removing Windows and Doors.
  • Prevent injury, handle, load, unload, and store items in a safe way.
  • Install auxiliary, glazing, and weatherproofing components to products following work instructions/manufacturer specifications.
  • Adhere to all health and safety rules and procedures and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Identify workplace risks and hazards and put control measures in place.
  • Examine and inspect work – both intermediate and final.
  • Identify and correct any errors or unfinished work.
  • Communicate with coworkers/customers by using industry-specific terminology.
  • Complete any workplace documentation that is required.
  • Inform on job outcomes and problems.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience for an intermediate apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Observation with Questioning 
  • Interview, underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
  • Multiple-choice test 

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Level: 2 – Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: DT
  • Potential salary upon completion: £19,000
