Environmental Health Practitioner

As an environmental health practitioner, you will most likely work for a local government in various settings, ranging from residential to hazardous situations, primarily in commercial and industrial environments.

As an expert, professional, and technical adviser, you will assist other local government agencies, external organisations, members of the public, and businesses on environmental issues.

You will be expected to attend council committees, courts of law, tribunals, and public meetings, all of which are related to the main objective of your work, which is to create a safe and healthy environment for the public and businesses via education and enforcement.

You will act as an adviser, teacher, consultant, and enforcement officer to ensure that people live and work in safe and healthy environments.

Some situations you’ll face include inspecting food facilities and workplaces for food safety and health and safety compliance, monitoring air quality, investigating food fraud, and dealing with unscrupulous landlords.

You will get a bachelor’s degree in environmental health or science.

What you’ll learn

On an environmental health practitioner apprenticeship course, you’ll learn:

  • Collaborate with partner agencies to ensure effective environmental health interventions 
  • Inspect and audit premises, vehicles, processes etc and carry out other forms of intervention 
  • Identify hazards, assess risks to human health and communicate solutions on a range of environmental health matters
  • Obtain and analyse scientific data and interpret results in accordance with relevant standards to determine corrective action 

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • 4 or 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C) and A levels, or equivalent, for a higher or degree apprenticeship
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment consists of two assessment methods:

  • Written exam 
  • Professional discussion

You’ll almost certainly need a full, clean driver’s licence for this job.

  • Duration: 48 months
  • Level: 6 – Degree Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Science
  • Potential salary upon completion: £28,000 per annum
