Electronic Product Service and Installation Engineer

On an electronic product service and installation engineer apprenticeship course, you’ll help install and service a range of domestic and/or commercial equipment.

You’ll learn how to install and service various household and commercial appliances. Furthermore, the ‘smart home’ allows wireless control of different gadgets and links their requirements.

This apprenticeship will enhance your ICT literacy and your understanding of all connection components required to meet the needs of these “smart” products. You will also acquire experience with mobile and computer apps.

Because technology is constantly changing and the range of products requiring engineering skills is growing, you’ll need to update and refresh your knowledge and skills during your apprenticeship and beyond.

Because you will spend most of your time in the customer’s home or workplace, you must be polite, well-dressed, and have good customer-facing skills.

What you’ll learn

On an electronic product service and installation engineer apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Perform electrical safety inspections.
  • Avoid the risks of unused energy.
  • Ascertain that all tools and equipment are safe and appropriate for their intended usage.
  • Recognise and put into practice EU/BS product standards.
  • Recognise and use the appropriate mode of communication and engage with and listen to customers.
  • Investigate and apply current and applicable environmental regulations to installations and repairs.
  • Perform electrical safety inspections.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s directions while installing the product.
  • Make network connections like WiFi, Internet, and Bluetooth.
  • Demonstrate the product to the customer’s satisfaction, ensuring that the products can be used.
  • Complete all paperwork, including re-call registration if agreed upon with the customer.
  • Ascertain that the new components are correct and meet the requirements.
  • Replace or replace parts using the correct order, tools, and techniques.
  • Ensure that no other components are damaged.
  • Ascertain that the product is functional, test it for electrical safety and conformity with EU/BS requirements, and present it to the customer.
  • Observe and obey the Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) rules while handling spare parts.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience for an advanced apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Practical Skills Test 
  • Professional Discussion
  • Online Multiple-Choice Test.

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 36 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: ICT, science and maths
  • Potential salary upon completion: £21,000 per annum
