Electrical Power Protection and Plant Commissioning Engineer

On an electrical power protection and plant commissioning engineer apprenticeship course, you’ll help carry out a range of engineering work on power protection systems, plant and equipment.

Testing and commissioning of electrical power plants and related equipment are required to verify that the installation and operation of new and refurbished protection systems comply with manufacturer requirements, business procedures, and operational parameters.

You will work in all areas of the electrical power business, including power generation, transmission, and distribution.

You will be responsible for installing, testing, and commissioning protective systems and demonstrating the integrity of other power system plants and equipment.

You will be in charge of electrical power project testing, commissioning, and ensuring that the work is done safely and reliably.

What you’ll learn

On an electrical power protection and plant commissioning engineer apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Apply excellent engineering and analytical techniques to normal and abnormal circumstances involving high voltage power production, transmission and distribution systems, and equipment.
  • Employ safe working practices in line with company processes and regulatory regulations.
  • Verify the high voltage plant’s fitness for compliance and operational service.
  • Read and understand a wide range of engineering designs and drawings.
  • Generate and recheck technical reports.
  • Interact with people effectively to ensure the tests meet the required standards/specifications.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • GCSE English and two A-levels in science and maths for a higher apprenticeship.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge test 
  • Observation of practical work activities
  • Technical interview

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 36 months
  • Level: 4 – Higher Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Maths and science
  • Potential salary upon completion: £30,000 per annum
