On a dual fuel smart meter installer apprenticeship course, you’ll help install, exchange and maintain smart meters and explain to customers how they work and how to use energy more efficiently.
The installation of dual fuel smart metres is an important component of the government’s aim of reducing carbon emissions and improving energy management.
As an apprentice installer, you will be responsible for the safe installation, exchange, commissioning, decommissioning, and ongoing maintenance of smart metering systems, associated equipment, and communication networks.
This includes describing how they work and giving up-to-date energy efficiency suggestions to the customer.
The dual fuel smart metre installation job is physically demanding since it may require lifting and moving equipment and working at heights and in cramped quarters.
In this job, you will perform high safety-critical activities while working on client premises.
If you complete your apprenticeship, you will be eligible to join the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
What you’ll learn
On a dual fuel smart meter installer apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:
- Conduct a thorough risk assessment to ensure the customer’s safety, yourself, and your property upon arrival, installation, and departure.
- Accept personal accountability for adhering to safety rules and achieving job objectives.
- Use tools, equipment, and personal protection equipment safely and appropriately.
- Install, replace, commission, decommission, and maintain Smart metering, associated equipment, and communication systems in accordance with industry standards.
- Work with focus and clarity in all situations and settings, solving business requirements usually alone, and safely adjusting working methods to reflect changes in working environments.
- Work with appropriate care and respect for the customer’s premises/property, focusing on safety.
- Offer customers the best possible experience, and utilise various appropriate communication methods to interact with them and others to deliver/receive information properly, on time, and in a pleasant manner. This will include both practical advice and the benefits of using the gadget.
- Determine if the conditions or surroundings are dangerous and take the appropriate precautions within your area of expertise.
- Prepare and order equipment and tasks following relevant operational standards or a certain set of rules or guidelines.
Entry requirements
You’ll usually need:
- Two to four GCSEs, including maths and English, or equivalent qualifications, and a recognised background check.
- Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.
Assessment methods
The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods:
- Portfolio, including a work observation record and final review
- End-point interview

You’ll need to:
- have a full driving licence
- pass background checks
