On a cyber security technician apprenticeship course, you’ll help monitor and detect potential security threats to an organisation.

A cyber security technician is the main point of contact for cyber security help. This requires employees to monitor and identify potential security threats and escalate when necessary.

You will help an organisation’s commercial activities run smoothly and safely by establishing cyber security procedures and putting security rules and controls in place.

As a cyber security technician, you will aid in developing an organisation’s cyber security by detecting weaknesses and threats and helping grow the organisation’s cyber security.

You will utilise procedures and controls to maintain the security and management of an organisation and manage security demands to guarantee the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of digitally stored information.

Daily, you will patch software, deploy software updates, implement access control, and set up firewalls and security incident and event monitoring systems.

What you’ll learn

On a cyber security technician apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Maintain data security procedures.
  • Maintain data security safeguards.
  • Create training and awareness materials for information security.
  • Investigate the effectiveness of information security training and awareness.
  • Handle and assess security requests from a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain technological security measures while adhering to technical standards.
  • Recognise when and how to escalate information security issues following relevant rules and standards.
  • Maintain an inventory of your digital information systems, services, devices, and data storage.
  • Analyse the results of a vulnerability assessment for cyber security.
  • Conduct risk evaluations for digital information.
  • Identify and categorise threats, vulnerabilities, and dangers to prepare for a response or escalation.
  • Keep track of cyber security incidents while retaining evidence.
  • Create information management reports in standard formats that are appropriate for the recipients.
  • Examine cyber security policies, procedures, standards, and recommendations and give comments.
  • Conduct audits of cyber security compliance.
  • Transform audit needs and gather relevant data from log files, incident reports, and other data sources.
  • Keep up to date on legislation and industry standards related to the deployment of cyber security in an organisation.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience are likely.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three distinct assessment methods: 

  • Scenario Demonstrations with questioning
  • Professional Discussion underpinned by Portfolio 
  • Knowledge Test

Restrictions and requirements

You’ll need to:

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: ICT
  • Potential salary upon completion: £25,000
