Construction Quantity Surveyor

On a construction quantity surveyor apprenticeship course, you’ll help manage all construction projects’ financial and legal aspects.

A quantity surveyor is in charge of overseeing the financial and legal aspects of construction projects.

As an apprentice, you will develop into a surveyor capable of leading on the complex pricing and spending associated with building, starting with studying the whole life cycle of a potential project and understanding what the client expects.

You’ll be in charge of contractors, ensuring that disputes are handled and resolved amicably, projects are commercially successful, and keeping tight control over all expenditure and income.

You’ll need to become a competent and reliable financial accountant and a confident and effective leader and manager who can resolve disputes.

You will get a bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying at the end of your studies.

What you’ll learn

On a construction quantity surveyor apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

• Understand and evaluate conflict avoidance and dispute resolution principles such as adjudication and arbitration among project stakeholders.
• Detect and manage health, safety, and welfare issues in line with laws, risks, and safe work practices.
• Examine the benefits and drawbacks of a project’s sustainability initiatives.
• Offer legal advice on a project’s legal aspects and the appropriate kind of contract to ensure fairness and efficiency.
• Advise on the best building choices for clients while increasing project cost efficiency within budget constraints.
• Advise on the appropriateness of various procurement techniques, as well as supervise and report on the bidding and negotiation processes used to choose specialised contractors
• Provide advice to the construction team and the client on how to keep anticipated expenses under budget.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement risk-mitigation strategies.
• Monitor, report, and advise the construction team on the project’s cashflows and profitability. Evaluate and advise on the financial consequences of construction-related choices.
• Assess, analyse, report progress throughout the building phase and assist with programme control.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

• Completion of the level 4 construction quantity surveying technician apprenticeship
• Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.
