Business Administrator

On a business administrator apprenticeship course, you’ll help support and improve administrative services within an organisation.

Both small and large organisations require a company administrator. You’ll develop, execute, manage, and enhance administrative services on your own or as part of a team.

By supporting functional areas, interacting across teams, and resolving issues as needed, your role will help an organisation’s efficiency while focusing on delivering value. In addition, because of the necessary flexibility and responsiveness, you’ll be able to develop diverse skills.

You’ll be expected to complete your tasks swiftly and accurately. Therefore, a high level of communication and a proactive approach to skill development is required.

You’ll also be expected to show initiative, the ability to manage priorities and your own time, problem-solving skills, decision-making, and the aptitude to take on people management responsibilities through mentoring or coaching others.

What you’ll learn

On a business administrator apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Write letters or emails, prepare proposals, handle financial operations, record and analyse data, and use a variety of IT packages and systems appropriate for the organisation. For example, Microsoft Office or similar programmes. Ability to select the best IT solution for a specific business problem. As needed, update and evaluate databases, record, and analyse data.
  • Draft communication and reports, as well as having the ability to review the work of others. Maintain business records and files and handle confidential information following company policies.
  • Make excellent decisions based on the strong logic and maturely deal with problems. When necessary, enlists the assistance of more senior members of the team.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships both within and outside of their team. Demonstrate the ability to influence and challenge others effectively. Whilst improve coaching skills and become a role model for your peers and team members as their subject competence grows.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication ability in person, on the phone, in writing, and on digital platforms. Recognise and employs relevant social media solutions. Answers questions from inside and outside the company while representing the company or department.
  • Complete tasks to a high standard. Demonstrate the requisite skill to execute tasks and always look for ways to improve. Capable of performing independent process assessments and making improvement recommendations. Shares administrative best practices throughout the organisation, such as educating staff on how to complete jobs quickly. Serve as a primary point of contact for concerns and applies problem-solving skills to challenging or complex challenges.
  • Fulfil deadlines, assume responsibility for initiating and completing activities, and manage priorities and time. Manage colleague expectations at all levels positively and set an excellent example for others in the workplace. Make recommendations for bettering working practices, demonstrating an awareness of the ramifications beyond the immediate area (e.g. impact on clients, suppliers, and other parts of the organisation). Organise meetings and events, take minutes at meetings, and generates action reports as needed. Assumes responsibility for travel and lodging arrangements.
  • Create reports using relevant project management principles and tools. You’ll need to plan for the required resources to complete projects successfully. Then, as needed, take on and lead initiatives.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, including English and maths, for an advanced apprenticeship
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises three elements:

  • Knowledge test 
  • Portfolio-based interview 
  • Project presentation

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 18 months
  • Level: 3 – Advanced Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Business studies and ICT
  • Potential salary upon completion: £20,000 per annum
