On a beauty and make-up consultant apprenticeship course, you’ll demonstrate, promote and recommend the use, benefits and application of a range of retail beauty products.

A beauty and make-up consultant works at a department store or retail establishment. As a beauty and make-up consultant, you will use your knowledge to demonstrate, promote, and recommend the use, benefits, and application of a wide range of retail beauty products, such as make-up, skincare, nail care, and fragrance.

You shall follow relevant laws, brand standards, pricing and promotional structures, and organisational processes.

You’ll work as part of a team as well as independently, with the help of a department or counter manager, to provide exceptional, personalised customer service and care in a fast-paced retail environment, all while achieving sales and profit targets.

You’ll be motivated, have a strong work ethic, a curious mind, and be ready to learn about your chosen area and further your professional development.

What you’ll learn

On a beauty and make-up consultant apprenticeship course, you’ll learn to:

  • Carry out and maintain organisational and beauty retail industry duties and professionalism requirements: meet corporate and industry appearance standards; maintain expected image and etiquette; implement equality and diversity protocols; work under pressure; observe time management and self-management; support and manage a work area; complete services in a commercially viable time frame and to a high standard; demonstrate a passion for the beauty retail industry
  • Maintain effective, hygienic, and safe working methods and safety considerations; follow workplace, supplier, or manufacturer’s instructions for the safe use of equipment, materials, and products; respect the customer’s modesty, privacy, and comfort; and reduce the risk of cross-infection, injury, or fatigue. encourage environmentally friendly and sustainable working practices; ensuring personal hygiene and protection fulfils industry and organisational standards
  • Consult with customers, plan, organise, and provide basic skincare and make-up education, and evaluate the efficacy of skin care and make-up instruction to meet particular customer needs, situations, and skin type/condition.
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate promotional activities to increase retail beauty sales.
  • Determine sales objectives and create prospective sales; educate and convince consumers to buy more services/products. Stock rotation and maintenance must be carried out.
  • Determine and recommend appropriate fragrance choices based on customer fragrance preferences.

Entry requirements

You’ll usually need:

  • Depending on the employer, but likely GCSEs or equivalent qualifications or relevant experience.
  • Apprentices without level 2 English and maths will need to achieve this before taking the end-point assessment.

Assessment methods

The End Point Assessment comprises two distinct assessment methods: 

  • Knowledge Test
  • Observation 

Duration, level, subjects and potential salary upon completion

  • Duration: 12 months
  • Level: 2 – Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Relevant school subjects: Art
  • Potential salary upon completion: £20,000 per annum
