Are Apprenticeships Free

Unlike other post-secondary options, such as further education or university, working as an apprentice will not cost you anything, regardless of age.

You will be trained, but remember that you will also be doing real work for which you will be paid. Employers often seek government assistance to cover expenses such as training and salaries. Apprentices are paid weekly or monthly and must pay tax and national insurance as standard.

Apprentices are paid £4.81 per hour, which is the National Minimum Wage. This minimum apprentice rate applies to apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 and above in their first year of training.

All other apprentices are eligible for the national minimum wage based on

age. Employers may pay more than the minimum wage, and many do, but they must ensure that their apprentices are paid at least the minimum wage.
